CHAPTER 8

July 30, 1867

Kyle mounted the light brown mare from Dylan’s stock back in Omaha and settled into the saddle as his uncle watched. She was a temporary ride and would be left with Bryn for his growing herd.

“Ready for a long ride, Kyle?” Dylan asked with a marginal grin.

“Yes, sir. I’m ready, but I’m not sure my behind is.”

Dylan laughed then said, “Okay, let’s head to Denver.”

Kyle nudged the mare forward and had her at slow trot beside Dylan so they could continue their long conversation.

Ever since they’d boarded the train in Omaha, they had engaged in an almost non-stop dialogue interrupted only by sleep. The long train ride to Julesburg had taken longer than Dylan’s trip east from the end of track because it was a passenger train.

During that first leg of the trip, they’d exchanged what would be classified as war stories even though neither had been in the actual war. Kyle had explained his two confrontations on his trip and then asked Dylan about his much more numerous adventures. Dylan had also talked extensively about Bryn, including how he’d won his Medal of Honor.

Now as they started their long ride to Denver, the subject shifted when Kyle asked him how he’d met Gwen.

Dylan was more than happy to tell the story beginning when he’d first spotted the small, pigtailed girl standing with the other women on the deck of the Providence.

As he talked, Kyle could see and hear the pleasure his uncle had when he spoke of his wife and after meeting her, he could understand why. When he’d gone to their home to pick out his horse, he could see the same joy in her face when she was with Dylan. He’d never seen such bonding before and was sure that was how his mother had felt about Dylan’s brother, Huw.

When he finally finished, Kyle asked, “How did Uncle Bryn meet Erin?”

Dylan’s explanation wasn’t as animated, but his uncle’s description of Bryn and Erin’s relationship sounded much the same and he wondered how both of his uncles could have been so fortunate in their choices. Maybe it was just karma.

As they stopped for their first break to rest the horses, Dylan asked, “Can you show me how you use that club of yours? I had a hard time imagining how you could drive off two knife-wielding thieves and then dismount and disarm a rider with just a heavy stick.”

“I’ll be happy to, but you’ve got to show me how to use the pistol and the repeater you gave me, too.”

“I’ll do that. I was really surprised to see that you had a Smith & Wesson Model 2. Most men carry one version of a Colt or the other. Was that Lowry’s pistol, the man you laid low with your club?”

“Yup,” Kyle said as he slipped the bat from his bedroll.

He spent a couple of minutes working out the kinks and stiffness that was already causing him some discomfort before he grasped his bat and began his dance.
